5-hmdC: The Sixth Nucleoside of the Genome
No.164(January 2015)
2'-Deoxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)cytidine (5-hmdC, 1) was recently discovered as an oxidation product of 2'-deoxy-5-methylcytidine (5-mdC) in mammalian DNA, particularly in stem cell DNA.1) The function of 1 is currently not clear, but it is assumed that 5-hmdC might be an intermediate of an active demethylation process in stem cells. To date the efficient detection 1 in a genome has been investigated.2)
