L-Theanine: An Important Neurotransmitter Found in Tea Plant

L-Theanine is a glutamate analog found in tea plants (Camellia sinensis) and the main component responsible for the exotic taste (umami) of green tea. It has been reported that L-theanine is an important neurotransmitter concerned with memory, and permeates the blood-brain barrier and exerts neuroprotective effects. 1,2) L-Theanine shows an antagonistic effect on AMPA/Kainate-type glutamate receptors. L-Theanine also acts on glutamine transporters and inhibits the glutamate/glutamine cycle. Furthermore, L-theanine enhances the antitumor efficacy of chemotherapeutic agents. 3,4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
