Application
Nicotine: A Nicotinic Acetylcholine Receptors (nAChRs) Agonist

Nicotine (or (-)-(S)-nicotine) is an alkaloid and natural insecticide that acts as an anti-herbivore chemical in tobacco plants. Nicotine acts as a nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) agonist. nAChRs are a family of ligand-gated ion channels. Recent studies have shown that nicotine activates neuronal nAChRs in peripheral and central nervous systems leading to depolarization of cell membranes and elevation of intracellular calcium levels, which are considered to cause stimulation of neurotransmitter release, synaptic transmission, intracellular signal transduction and gene expression.1) Nicotine is also used as a probe agent for phenotyping cytochrome P450 2A6 (CYP2A6) which is involved in the metabolism of nicotine.2) (The product is for research purpose only.)
