Application
Isosorbide 5-Mononitrate: A Vasodilator with Effects on both Arteries and Veins
Isosorbide 5-mononitrate is the major active metabolite of isosorbide dinitrate which is a vasodilator with effects on both arteries and veins. The mechanism of action has not been established. But animal data suggests that its vasodilator properties result from the release of nitric oxide and the subsequent activation of guanylyl cyclase. Furthermore, the cyclic GMP produced by the guanylate cyclase acts via cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase. The protein kinase lowers intracellular calcium by increasing its extracellular excretion, resulting in relaxation of vascular smooth muscle. In clinidal, isosorbide 5-mononitrate is used for the treatment of angina pectoris. (The product is for research purpose only.)
