Surfactant for Biochemistry
No.159(October 2013)
Sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is a detergent used in life science research. Especially, SDS is frequently used for polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (PAGE). However, as SDS precipitates at low temperature, improved methods by substitution of another cation for Na+ have been demonstrated to increase the solubility of dodecyl sulfate. The method using lithium dodecyl sulfate (LDS, 1) is one of them and 1 is suitable for electrophoresis at low temperature and low pH.1-3) Similarly, 1 has used for isolation of viruses, membrane proteins, etc.4-6)
