Erastin: Inducer of Ferroptosis
Ferroptosis was reported by Stockwell et al. in 2012 as iron-dependent cell death mechanism separate from apoptosis.1) Ferroptosis is thought to be involved in various diseases such as neurodegenerative diseases2) and ischemia-reperfusion injury.3) Erastin induces ferroptosis by inhibiting cystine uptake into the cell by the cystine transporter and decreasing the intracellular concentration of the antioxidant glutathione.4)
