Ciclopirox: An Antifungal Agent with Additional Antibacterial, Anti-Inflammatory and Antitumor Activities
Ciclopirox is a synthetic, broad-spectrum antifungal agent with additional antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and also recently antitumor activities.
In vitro studies have suggested that ciclopirox acts by chelation of trivalent cations, such as Fe
3+ and Al
3+, resulting in the inhibition of the metal-dependent enzymes that are responsible for the cellular metabolism, organization of cell wall structure and other crucial cell functions.
1,2) In addition, ciclopirox exerts its anti-inflammatory activity by scavenging the reactive oxygen species (ROS) released from inflammatory cells.
2) In 2000s, some studies have reported that ciclopirox olamine [
C3545] could be repositioned as a new antitumor agent.
