Application
5-(Hydroxymethyl)cytidine: An Important Base-modified Ribonucleoside in Epigenetics
5-(Hydroxymethyl)cytidine (hm5C) is a modified ribonucleoside that has long been known to be present in mRNA, tRNA, and rRNA. 5-(Hydroxymethyl)cytidine in RNA is generated by 5-methylcytidine (m5C) [M1931] oxidation in vivo. Recent studies have discovered that 5-(hydroxymethyl)cytidine is a prevalent mRNA modification in eukaryotes and has roles in cell viability and development through these effects on RNA as follows; RNA structure and translation efficiency.1,2) In addition, 5-(hydroxymethyl)cytidine has been reported to have important functions in the nervous system.3-5)
