Application
Aihydrolipoic Acid: A Powerful Antioxidant and a Radical Scavenger

α-Lipoic acid [L0058] and its reduced form, dihydrolipoic acid, are powerful antioxidants. Dihydrolipoic acid also scavenges superoxide and peroxyl radicals and can regenerate thioredoxin (a class of small redox proteins), vitamin C [A0537], and glutathione oxidized form [G0073] to its reduced form [G0074], which in turn can recycle vitamin E [T0251]. Dihydrolipoic acid is a racemic compound but the R-enantiomer is thought to be more bioavailable compared to the S-enantiomer.
