Application
Aristolochic Acid: A Carcinogenic, Mutagenic, and Nephrotoxic Phytochemical
Aristolochic acid is a carcinogenic, mutagenic, and nephrotoxic phytochemical found in the flowering plant family Aristolochiaceae, which has been widely used as a traditional herbal medicine to treat kidney and urinary problems. In 1994, Vanherweghem et al. reported that a cause of progressive interstitial fibrosis of the kidney was associated with herbs containing aristolochic acid.1) Since then, aristolochic acid has been reported to be associated with the development of progressive interstitial fibrosis of the kidney, called aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN), and with urothelial cancer in AAN patients.2-4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
