Application
Esterification of Alcohols with Sodium Carboxylates
Experimental procedure: To a double-necked round bottom flask equipped with a condenser is added a mixture of alcohol (0.01 mol), TsIm (0.012 mol), TEA (0.015 mol), RCO2Na (0.02 mol) and a catalytic amount of TBAI (0.1 g) in DMF (30 mL). The mixture is refluxed until TLC monitoring indicates no further improvement in the conversion. The solvent is evaporated under vacuum and the remaining foam is dissolved in CHCl3 (100 mL) and subsequently washed with water (2 x 100 mL). The organic layer is dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated. The crude product is purified by column chromatography on silica gel eluting with a mixture of n-hexane/EtOAc to afford the desired ester.
