Application
Ivermectin: A Semisynthetic Anthelmintic Agent with Antiviral Activity
Ivermectin is a semisynthetic anthelmintic agent derived from the avermectins isolated from the fermentation products of Streptomyces avermitilis.1,2) Ivermectin contains B1a (C48H74O14) and B1b (C47H72O14), but the main component is B1a as shown in the figure. The mechanism of action of ivermectin is not fully understood, but it is strongly suggested to be related to glutamate-gated chloride channels in the muscles and nerves of nematode.2) Ivermectin binds with high affinity to glutamatergic chloride channels of nematode. As the result, the nematode is thought to be paralyzed. In addition, it has recently been reported that ivermectin has a broad spectrum of antiviral activity in vitro, including SARS-CoV-2.3,4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
