Application
Sumatriptan Succinate: A Selective 5-HT1B/1D Receptor Agonist
Sumatriptan succinate is a selective 5-HT1B/1D receptor agonist, belongs to triptans. Sumatriptan binds with high affinity to 5-HT1 receptor subtypes (5-HT1B, 5-HT1D), but has only a week affinity for a serotonergic receptor subtype (5-HT1A) and has no significant affinity for serotonergic receptor subtypes (5-HT1c, 5-HT2, 5-HT3) or for adrenergic (α1, α2, β), dopamine (D1, D2), muscarinic, or benzodiazepine receptors. Animal studies shows that sumatriptan presumably exerts its therapeutic effects in the treatment of migraine headache through agonist effects at the 5-HT1B/1D receptors on intracranial blood vessels and sensory nerves of the trigeminal system. In addition, the transdermal iontophoretic patch of sumatriptan succinate is developed. (The product is for research purpose only.)
