Application
D-Penicillamine: A Well-Known Heavy Metal Chelator with Pharmacologic Effects
D-Penicillamine, a hydrolytic degradation product of penicillin-type antibiotics, is a well-known heavy metal chelator. It is used medically as a treatment for medical problems such as Wilson's disease (too much copper in the body), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), cystinuria, and lead poisoning. The pharmacologic effects of D-penicillamine would be associated with formation of penicillamine-cysteine disulfide bond, and metal chelation. Also unlike cytotoxic immunosuppressants which act on both, penicillamine in vitro depresses T-cell activity but not B-cell activity. (The product is for research purpose only.)
