Application
Ametycin: A DNA Interstrand Cross-Linking Agent
Ametycin (also known as Mitomycin C) is an antitumor antibiotic and a bifunctional alkylating agent, first isolated from the broth filtrate of Streptomyces caespitosus by Hata et al. (Kitasato Institute) in 1955. Some metabolic activation forms of ametycin inhibit DNA synthesis by causing cross-linking specificity for the sequence CpG. Ametycin causes cell cycle arrest in phase-nonspecific but is most active in S and G phases, and induces apoptosis in cancer cells.
