Application
Apocynin: A Selective Inhibitor of NADPH Oxidase Activity
Apocynin, a methoxy-substituted catechol analog, is contained in the traditional medicinal plant Picrorhiza kurroa which has been used for the treatment of liver and heart problems. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase is an enzyme that effectively reduces O2 to superoxide anion radical (O2–) by transferring one electron to oxygen from NADPH. The superoxide anion radical can be used by the immune system to kill bacteria and fungi. It has been reported that apocynin acts as an inhibitor of NADPH oxidase activity, and can decrease the production of superoxide anion radical from activated neutrophils and macrophages. The production of superoxide anion radical has also been shown to be associated with inflammation. Acutually, the anti-inflammatory activity of apocynin has been demonstrated in a variety of cell and animal models of inflammation. (A related compound: NADPH. 3Na Salt [T0521]) (The product is for research purpose only.)
