p-Nitrophenyl Carbonate Monomer for Introduction of Functional Moieties into Polymers and Monomers
2-(p-Nitrophenoxycarbonyloxy)ethyl Methacrylate (1) is a methacrylate monomer that reacts with primary amino groups to introduce functional moieties via a urethane linkage. In addition to its use in the synthesis of functional monomers,1) 1 can also be used to introduce functional moieties into (co)polymers derived from 1,2-5) providing an advantageous approach to incorporating functional groups that are not compatible with polymerization conditions. Furthermore, since 1 is applicable to polymer synthesis by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) or reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization, it has been used to develop therapeutic nanoparticles by incorporating compounds such as the anti-tumor drug doxorubicin,3) dopamine coordinating to iron ions,3,4) and DFO coordinating to 89Zr,5) into block copolymers composed of 1.
