Application
Piperacillin Sodium: A Broad Spectrum Penicillin with an Increased Activity against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa
iperacillin sodium, a number of so-called broad spectrum penicillins, is chemically synthesized from 6-APA [A0800]. Piperacillin have an increased activity against many Gram-negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumonia and Serratia marcescens. It acts as a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme transpeptidase, which is needed by bacteria to make their cell walls. Piperacillin is often used in combination with tazobactam [T3732] which is a β-lactamase inhibitor to increase the antibiotic spectrum of it. Piperacillin–tazobactam has a broad spectrum of antibacterial activity that includes Gram-positive and -negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria.
