Application
Podophyllotoxin: A Lignin with Antineoplastic and Antiviral Properties

Podophyllotoxin is a naturally occurring lignan isolated from Podophyllum peltatum, with important antineoplastic and antiviral properties. Although the exact mechanism of action is unknown, podophyllotoxin is believed to exert its antimitotic effect by binding to tubulin. In addition, podophyllotoxin derivatives, such as etoposide [E0675] and teniposide [T3109], act as topoisomerase II inhibitors and can cause arrest in the cell cycle of tumor at the G2/M stage.
