Application
Cefpirome: A Fourth Generation Cephalosporin with Broad Spectrum of Activity and Stability to β-Lactamases
Cefpirome sulfate is a fourth generation semi-synthetic cephalosporin. It has a broad spectrum of activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, and is generally more active against Gram-negative bacteria than the first and second generation cephalosporins. While the mechanism of action similar to other cephalosporins (inhibition of peptidoglycan synthesis by cell walls), cefpirome has also activity against Gram-positive coccus (eg. Streptococcus pneumoniae) more than the third generation cephalosporins, regardless of penicillin susceptibility. And it has increased stability to β-lactamases compared with the first and second generation cephalosporins.
