Application
Orotic Acid: An Essential Intermediate in the Biosynthesis of Pyrimidine Nucleotides
Orotic acid is known to be an essential intermediate in the biosynthesis of pyrimidine nucleotides. In mammals, it is released from mitochondrial dihydroorotate dehydrogenase (DHODH) for conversion to uridine monophosphate (UMP) by the cytoplasmic enzyme UMP synthase. Urinary orotic acid determination is a useful screening tool for many inborn errors of the urea cycle and a number of other disorders.
