Application
Ergosterol: A Sterol Found in Cell Membranes of Fungi

Ergosterol is a sterol found in cell membranes of fungi which use principally it instead of cholesterol [C0318] on humans and other mammals. So many antifungal agents target ergosterol as a way to disrupt the fungal plasma membrane. Ergosterol is also called provitamin D2 because exposure it to ultraviolet (UV) light causes a chemical reaction that produces vitamin D2 (calciferol or ergocalciferol) [C0005].
