Application
5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA): A Diagnostic Agent for Tumors Tissue
5-Aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a natural biochemical precursor of heme, is metabolized in a series of enzymatic reactions to fluorescent protoporphirin IX (PpIX) in the course of heme synthesis. 5-ALA is preferentially taken up by tumour tissue and intracellularly metabolised to PpIX which accumulates in tumor cells. Following excitation with blue light (λ=400 to 410 nm), the PpIX, which has accumulated selectively in the malignant tissue, emits a strong red PplX fluorescence (the peak is at 635 nm). Therefore, 5-ALA is often used to visualize tumorous tissue. (The product is for research purpose only.)
