Application
Tacrine: A Reversible Cholinesterase Inhibitor
Tacrine is a reversible cholinesterase inhibitor, and the first approved agent for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease.1) The mechanism of action of tacrine is thought to inhibit the metabolism of acetylcholine and therefore extending its activity and raising levels in the cerebral cortex.2,3) However, since tacrine shows various side effects and toxicity, the development of the next generation inhibitors such as donepezil [D4099 (HCl salt)] is underway.3,4) (The product is for research purpose only.)
