Application
Chenodeoxycholic Acid: A Naturally Occurring Bile Acid Having Suppressing Effects of Cholesterol and Cholic Acid Synthesis

Sodium chenodeoxycholate, a sodium salt of chenodeoxycholic acid, is a naturally occurring bile acid. Sodium chenodeoxycholate inhibits HMG-CoA-reductase and cholesterol-7α-hydroxylase, which are the rate-limiting step enzyme in cholesterol [C0318] and cholic acid [C0324] synthesis, respectively. Therefore, sodium chenodeoxycholate suppresses hepatic synthesis of both cholesterol and cholic acid, gradually replacing chenodeoxycholic acid in an expanded bile acid pool. In clinical use, these actions would contribute to gradual dissolution of cholesterol gallstones. (The product is for research purpose only.)
