Application
Direct Radical Arylation of Unactivated Arenes Using Phenyl Hydrazine
Typical Procedure: KOt-Bu (0.101 g, 0.9 mmol, 3.0 eq.), aryl iodide (0.3 mmol, 1.0 eq.) and benzene (2.8 mL) are added into a flame dried Schlenk tube under argon atmosphere. Then a 0.15 M solution of phenylhydrazine (0.2 mL, 0.03 mmol, 0.1 eq.) in benzene is added to this heterogeneous reaction mixture over 6 h using a syringe pump at 100 °C. After complete addition, the reaction mixture is stirred for an additional 24 h at 100 °C. After that it is cooled to room temperature, quenched with water (4 mL) and subsequently extracted with ethyl acetate (3 x 20 mL). The combined organic phase is washed with brine (5 mL), dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered and concentrated under vacuum. The crude product is purified by flash column chromatography using pentane or a 95:05 mixture of pentane/ethyl acetate as an eluent.
