Application
Cycloaddition of CO2 to Terminal Epoxides Catalyzed by NHC–ZnBr2 System under Mild Conditions
Typical procedure (R = Ph, entry 3): An oven-dried 50 mL flask containing 1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)imidazolium chloride (149 mg, 0.35 mmol), K2CO3 (48 mg, 0.35 mmol) and ZnBr2 (79 mg, 0.35 mmol) is purged with CO2 under atmospheric pressure three times. Then 1,2-epoxyethylbenzene (2.1 mg, 17.5 mmol) and DMSO (10 mL) are injected into the flask, and CO2 is provided by a balloon. The reaction is stirred at 80 °C for 24 h. After the reaction is cooled down, H2O (200 mL) is added to the reaction mixture. The mixture is extracted with CH2Cl2 (3 x 20 mL). The organic layer is filtered through a silica plug, and concentrated under vacuum to give 4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolan-2-one (2.73 mg, 95 %) as a white solid.
